Protecting Yourself - Home Security Research

January 23rd, 2008 · No Comments

You can spend weeks reviewing and analyzing all the different components that go into designing the perfect security system to protect your home and family, but some people forget to take into account the importance of home security systems monitoring and how it is a key element of any security plan. No matter how you design the equipment components that make up your home security system, no matter how cutting edge the motion detectors or your wireless camera network is, without excellent quality monitoring, all of that can be completely worthless and a waste of your time and money. Home security research is going to make the investment in a security system worth it.

Alarm monitoring is usually set up for you at the time you purchase your alarm system and have it installed. It is typically charged on a monthly basis, for as long as you have the service. You will want to check the fine print of the contract with your alarm company to see if you are required to use their monitoring service for a specified period of time. Some companies charge less for the equipment and installation, and hide some of their costs in the monthly monitoring fees.

The basic function of your monitoring service is to be immediately and automatically notified by your system when a problem happens in your home, such as when a protected entrance has been breached and the alarm code is not properly entered in a given amount of time. With most systems you can also have your home monitored for fire and also carbon monoxide as optional services, if the proper equipment has been installed. Some systems also include panic buttons on the control panels allowing the user to call for help if there is an emergency or if someone is attempting to break into the house.

Anytime the alarm system is tripped and an alarm sounds, the home security systems monitoring agency is immediately notified by a signal generated by the alarm system. The next step is for the monitoring service to determine what type of emergency exists, or if it could be a malfunction of some part of the system, or a false alarm set off by someone in the family. Based on whether contact is able to be established with the owner, and the type of alarm message they are receiving from your home unit, the monitoring center will determine if emergency services need to be contacted to have police, fire or medical services dispatched to the premises. Some simple home security will allow you to make an informed choice in selecting the company and equipment you intend to use.

Every burglar has two primary enemies: light and sound. Strategic placement of outdoor lighting, especially near entrances, can be a very effective deterrent. Interior lights are also helpful. There is no need for bright lighting in every room, but even a little light will make a burglar think twice before trying to enter your home. Burglars are often clever and persistent, but they also prefer easy targets.

Home security can start with making sure that a burglar does not have a good place to lurk but trimming trees and shrubs that might create hiding places, having some simple outdoor lighting, and making sure your locks are in good working order. Home security research will provide you with the information you need to keep your family and possessions safe and still be a cost effective solution.
