Amish Furniture Variety

February 5th, 2008 · No Comments

Amish furniture is an American-made product for any room in the house with styles to suite a wide range of tastes. The Amish carpenters typically make Mission, Shaker, and Queen Anne styles for bedrooms, kitchens, living rooms and dining rooms. They have a wide range of choices of furniture for children with much of the furniture convertible to suite different ages as the children grow up.

Amish Mission furniture is often sought after by those who enjoy a more masculine or robust style. It is characterized by generally straight lines, dark hardware and often includes mortise and tenon corners. Mission style furniture is often preferred by those who own spas or resorts, who live in the western United States or more rustic settings. The straight lines and no-nonsense style are preferred by those who like their furniture to be understated and functional.

Shaker furniture originated with the carpenters of the Shaker religion. As reflects the tenets of their religion Shaker style furniture is plain, durable and functional. The ladder back chair is a popular style of Shaker furniture. True Shaker style is characterized by very straight lines and wooden handles. Today, the Shaker style is carried on by the Amish carpenters and can be purchased in the original style produced by the Shakers or modified slightly to suit more modern tastes and styles.

Queen Anne furniture originated in England, migrated to America, and represents one of the first of what came to be known as period pieces. It represents a transition from what was mostly heavy, cumbersome furniture to more graceful and lighter styles. Queen Anne furniture is represented by scalloped edges and graceful legs such as the cabriolet leg. Queen Anne furniture is distinctly different from the straight lines of either Shaker or Mission furniture.

No matter what style you prefer or which room you are furnishing each of these styles can be made from a variety of woods. Oak is often preferred for Mission or Shaker furniture with quarter sawn oak being especially popular in the Mission style. On the other hand cherry and maple are often preferred over oak for Queen Anne furniture. However, there are no hard and fast rules and the choice of wood for a particular style of furniture is always up to the buyer.

The beauty of buying Amish-made furniture is that you have these varieties of styles to choose from in whatever wood you prefer. Many Amish carpenters will custom build or slightly modify existing designs to suite the tastes of the consumer. Regardless of what you buy from the Amish carpenter you can be sure that you are receiving affordable, beautiful furniture or great quality and durability. It is not unusual for Amish-made furniture to last decades and be handed down to the next generation.

Moreover, Amish furniture if American made and at the same price beats the quality of any other furniture you can buy from anywhere in the world.
