Home burglar alarms are no longer the domain of the rick and famous! As technology has improved and suppliers have become more common, home burglar alarms are now within reach of most people. The technology has improved so much that burglar alarm systems now come in kits that most people can fit for themselves. Most systems these days are actually wireless, which is really what makes them so much easier to install. No holes to dig or wires to chase.

Basic home burglar alarm systems come in two main flavours, open or closed circuit. Closed circuit systems are triggered when a door or window is opened. That way the circuit that was closed becomes open and the alarm is set off. Open circuit systems work the other way round.

It is much more common these days for systems to operate with motion sensors, which you place strategically around your home. When turned on, they will trigger whenever motion is detected with range of the sensors. With some of the more sophisticated models, you can adjust the sensitivity as well. You wouldn’t want the alarm to trigger if a fly buzzed through a room, for example, but you would if the object detected was much larger.

If you are setting up sensors outside of your house, to guard your garden or outbuildings for example, then the ability to adjust them becomes more important. They can be adjusted for pets moving around for example or anything else that you would consider to be normal activity in your household.

The best way to get full protection is to have motion sensors in your rooms, especially downstairs, and magnetic switches to protect doors and windows. These switches will trigger when a door or window is opened. With a combination of the two types of sensors, your home will be very secure from intruders.

Another security measure that you could consider is a surveillance camera. With the advent of digital recorders, it is very easy to store large amounts of footage on a relatively small space. So there would be no problem recording for several days at a time (or even weeks) so that you can monitor your home whilst you are away on holiday. It is also possible to monitor cameras whilst you are away for added peace of mind.

If you are away from home for any length of time, you could employ the services of a home security company, who will monitor your home for you. They will do this remotely of course, but should be on hand very quickly should anything untoward occur. This kind of setup might be costly though, but if you do leave your home unattended for any length of time, it could be a good solution for you.

Home security is relatively cheap these days, so you should consider it a good investment. There is a lot of flexibility and a lot of choice in how to secure your home. The fact that they can be simple to install would appeal to a lot of people who enjoy doing this kind of work, but even if you are not, they do not take long for trained professionals to install, so either way, a home security system should be within your budget.
