I am sure that near where you live you have seen wind powered generators popping up. I know that they are prevalent in the USA and I have seen them in some areas of England as well. They work well in open areas that are affected by the elements so that they have a lot of raw energy to draw on. Once the cost of making them and distributing them has been taken into account, they are a clean and cheap way to create the energy that we need. Bearing in mind the ever rising cost of oil and the inherent danger of nuclear power, wind powered generators are an excellent alternative energy source.

Some claim that there is an environmental cost to using wind powered generators. I guess that these are centred around the cosmetic view; maybe they are considered ugly by some, and an eyesore. That may be true, but that view is subjective. When you compare them to the burning of other fuels to get electricity, then the environmental angle falls flat. In my opinion, there is no comparison between wind powered generators and oil or nuclear based generators with respect to the environment.

The use of wind powered generators is not restricted to the wind farms that you see whilst driving on the motorways of England, the USA or Europe. It is possible for you to use this technology on a smaller scale at home?

You can buy small personal wind generators for use at home. The biggest question that you have to ask yourself is do you live in an area that has enough raw material to make a wind powered generator worthwhile for you? How much is enough? I think that depends on the generator in question. You would need to ask the manufacturers for guidance on this to decide if the amount of energy any particular wind powered generator produces would be worthwhile given your location. What I would say is the technology continues to move forward, and the generators being produced to today are probably capable of producing more electricity per unit of wind than their counterparts from say 10 years ago.
Even if a small wind powered generators was capable of generating enough electricity to run some of your small appliances it might be worth considering, given a longer term view. If you live in an area subject to power blackouts, then a wind powered generator has got to be a viable alternative to the oil guzzling machine you probably currently use as a backup.
Your other alternative of course is solar panels for the roof of your house. Whilst the amount of wind you get may vary, you can rely on several ours of daylight to power up solar panels. Perhaps a combination of the two would be the way to go for you?
