Black and white security cameras are becoming more available to consumers which means more people are now able to afford security on their homes and businesses.

The use of computer based security camera systems are increasing exponentially as computers dominate our day-to-day lives. The good news is that the color security camera is also becoming more affordable. Prices of color security cameras have been on somewhat of a decline in the past couple of years and now is a great time to consider them.

While black and white images are a good alternative from a budget conscious perspective, there is little doubt color presents a better image option. Internet options are excellent. Inexpensive cameras for under $20 are common and by connecting them to a computer’s hard drive you have yourself a great color option.

Okay, they may not be as competent as a full blown cabled security camera system but we’re trying to help your budget here and the truth is, it won’t be too long before this type of set up becomes the “norm” rather than the exception.

A good alternative is to combine black and white cameras with a color security camera. This means that instead of just having one colour camera to do the surveillance, you will have a much broader coverage and will be able to enhance your security coverage.

What About Colour Recording Equipment

When making the move from black and white to color security cameras, do not forget about the equipment used to record the images. If using a computer, most systems default to record in color.

However, many multiplexers, used to record as many as 16 camera shots on a single tape, are available in black and white and colour. A colour security camera connected to a black and white unit will only record in black and white nullifying the effect being sought.

Likewise, recording black and white images from a camera on colour equipment will generally appear in grey scale with some of the colours not properly represented. Law enforcement typically prefers seeing images from color security cameras as they can more accurately describe the apparel worn by a perpetrator.

In black and white, blue jeans a red shirt often translate into grey pants and a darker grey shirt which is no real help in finding a suspect. The price difference of colour security cameras today is so minimal that the use of black and white is quickly fading.
