My Love of Antique Grandfather Clocks

June 2nd, 2008 · No Comments

I’ve always appreciated the grandeur and elegance of antique grandfather clocks. Growing up in the old South, these magnificent beauties were commonplace in most of my friends’ homes, so I was introduced to many different varieties and styles. As a child, I promised myself I would always have an antique grandfather clock in my apartment or home when I grew up so my children could enjoy these masterpieces as much as I did. When I first moved in a place of my own, I wasn’t able to fulfill the promise I made to myself. I had no idea how expensive antique grandfather clocks were to purchase!

So as a young adult, I lived in many different places without having the comforting presence of one of these magnificent treasures to remind me of home. After a while I got used to the situation, but I always felt like my home wasn’t complete. I resolved to buy an authentic antique grandfather clock as soon as I emerged from the financial hole I was in. At the time, I was still paying off student loans, a monthly car payment, and a new mortgage to think about. Plus, I was trying to start a part-time business, so my limited income was pretty much spoken for as soon as the funds hit my bank account.

As luck would have it, my business venture turned out to be moderately successful, and I soon had more disposable income to spend. The first thing I did was started looking for the right antique grandfather clock that would help turn my house into a home. Even though I was doing better financially, I was still looking for a good deal. Since I like to do all of my shopping online, I browsed through some auction sites to see what authentic antique grandfather clocks were selling for. The ones I saw cost more money than I was willing to spend so I started looking for other alternatives.

I then found numerous websites that sold replica grandfather clocks. These are high-quality reproductions of the classic styles that I was so familiar with. But since these replicas were manufactured relatively recently, they were priced more reasonably. I was able to find a beautiful replica in finished mahogany for about a third of what I would have had to pay for an authentic antique grandfather clock of the same material.

Having my antique grandfather clock in my home, even if it’s a replica, evokes the wonderful sights and sounds of my childhood, and really takes me back to the good old days. And best of all, I was able to fulfill that old childhood promise I made to myself.
